I was supporting the Patriots, partly because my friend Brad is a fan of them, and partly because I don’t like the Giants.
My dislike of the Giants goes all the way back to the early 90’s. Back then Brad re-introduced me to football. He was a fan of the Washington Redskins at the time, so it was natural I gravitated towards his team. I remember borrowing Mike Ditka’s Ultimate Football, a computer game, and playing it a lot. I remember that Brad had adjusted the stats / names of the Washington players to accurately reflect their roster (Art Monk was slow, but a good receiver... that’s about all I remember).
So naturally I opposed the other teams in the Redskins division – the hated “America’s team” Dallas Cowboys (with their “triplets” of Troy Aikman, Emmett Smith and Michael Irvin), and similarly the Giants and Eagles. I think back then there were actually 5 teams in the division (the Phoenix / Arizona Cardinals), but they were awful so I didn’t hate them quite as much.
But now my hatred is dimming. I mean, I am a huge fan of one of the Giants players (JPP!).
So I left the Superbowl with a bit of a ho-hum feeling. When you have a team and they’re not there it’s just not the same.
